A waterfall is a natural spectacle—a performance staged by nature itself that draws crowds from afar, captivating them with its monumental presence. Olafur Eliasson famously harnessed this hypnotic power in his large-scale installation on New York’s Hudson River.
The exhibition ”WATERFALLS” is not an interpretation of Eliasson’s work, nor does it focus on physical mechanics. Instead, it explores the ideas and emotions a waterfall evokes.
As a symbol, a waterfall is deeply ambiguous. It represents a dramatic end—a literal fall—yet leads to calm, peaceful waters. Its raw power instills fear, while its beauty hypnotizes. It is both ever-changing and enduring: unlike a fleeting storm or hurricane, a waterfall possesses a sense of infinity, anchored by the solid rock that continually shapes it. It can also act as a living gate, hiding secrets or caves behind a wall of water.
